Emrys cried, a lot, today. He's not the kind of men who never cry, who's never weak. Sometimes he went in his bedroom when he's really sad and cry, alone, thinking about his dead wife. Today is worse than every other day because it's been two years since his wife died in a car accident. Last year was horrible, he drank all the night until he couldn't walk straight and then he went to sleep. This year Emrys decided to go out and drink, a lot, like last year. He don't know why he decided to go in a bar instead of staying in his appartment. The young man sat down and ordered a glass of whisky. Usually he drinks wine but for the actual situation, it's not enough, he needed something more strong than a glass of wine. And he likes whisky even if it makes him remember England and all the sad things that happened there.

My hands in the pockets of my trousers, I was walking in the street, going along the shop windows, hoping I could see anyone that I would recognise. There was not a soul out there in Bowen, at least at that time. I couldn't explain why, maybe everyone prefered to stay at home while it was a lovely night to hang out over there. I was carrying on and then, I saw this guy, this man called Emrys. He was older than me but he was still a friend of mine, a nice fellow I met in England. I walked into that bar where he was sitting on a stool, all alone, a glass in his hand. "Hey man! What are you doing here? You okay?" I asked to this man while I was taking place on a chair next to him. I ordered a drink, a whisky just to follow him and turned my gaze on him. "Seriously, what's wrong?" I kept asking gently before receiving my glass of alcohol and drinking a swallow. I couldn't tell what was going on, I didn't know that much about him, just enough to say I appreciated him. At first sight, when I met him, he looked shy and reserved, and that was what he probably was. Maybe the fact he was drinking on that day meant something. Perhaps he would talk and lose his tongue. Who knows? I will. I hope so.

While he was thinking about his wife, a man sat down on a chair next to him. Emrys looked at him with a sad eye. He remembered him a bit, they met in england few years ago, he didn't know he was there, in Bowen. The man asked him if he's okay. He couldn't answer a simple yes like everybody does everyday because it's not true and he couln't lie, his eyes are red because he cried a lot today, Edward would see that he's not okay. Emrys thought if he came to met him it was because he saw that something went wrong. At first, he didn't answer the question but when the man asked him again how he is, Emrys felt he had to say something. “today is not the best” it's quite obviously but he didn't want to say : oh you know two years ago my wife died in a car accident. He drank his glass of whisky and ordered another one, he will need several other glasses to forget how sad is this day and more if he needs to talk to someone. “how you remember me ?” He asked to Edward. They had seen them years ago why he is coming to talk to him now, they are like nobody for each other. Emrys remembers quite well people, especially their voices but it's not the case of everyone.

"How could I not?" I asked him back. He wasn't like my best friend but a good acquaintance even if they hadn't talked for years. I knew that something went wrong, I felt like his voice, his way of talking was kind of rough, or should I say agressive but I couldn't explain way. I simply frowned before looking at my glass and drinking again. "Do you wanna talk about it? I asked one more time to this man. He looked miserable and I couldn't help for the moment. I stayed silent, his eyes were red as if he cried a lot and I couldn't understand what happened. Maybe someone told him somebody else died, maybe his work made him become like that, maybe his wife -if he has one- told him it was over between them. Sometimes I could guess the past of the people but there were so many possibilities. "I do know that we dont really know each other but for the moments we spent together, we got along. If you wanna talk, here I am. Even if I'm like a stranger for ya." I told him before looking at him and drinking another swallow. And I was sincere. I wasn't that kind of persson who cared a lot about people, but Emrys, it was different. I enjoyed his compagny even if he didn't talk that much.

Emrys isn't someone who talks a lot, he thinks if he haven't something interesting to say, he have to keep his mouth close. When he was in England and everything was fine, he talked a bit more, especially about his wife. He used to talk about her to everybody, he was so in love with her. But now, it's more complicated for him to say something about Daisy because it remembers him her car accident and her dead. Even if he thinks about her like thousands times everyday, he never said something, it's like his secret garden. But tonight, it's quite different, he drank and it's a special day and not the happiest. For a second, he thinks about tomorrow and the hangover he will have but he doesn't care about it, for now, he needs to drink more. Emrys finds Edward quite sweet because he don't have to be kind towards him, even if they know each others a bit. He finishes his second glass of whisky, asks for another and then start to talk “You know...I had a wife...and...now she's dead...and...I don't know how I can survive without her.” He survived for two years but it's only because he became history teacher, his dream-job, it helps him to forget, a little, his loneliness.

Wow. To be honest, I felt like stupid at that time. I was like on my ass, I didn't expect such news from him. I could now understand why he was drinking like a fish. I wanted to talk but the only thing I did was to open my mouth and close it like a numb would have done. "I'm... I'm so sorry..." I told him quite sincerely. "When did it happen? And how?" I asked him. Surviving without someone we do love. I didn't even know how we could do this. I've never been attached to someone like he was with his wife. I would have liked to give him some advices but instead, I drank another swallow. One more time. "What do you do now? Have you tried to look for someone else?" I followed with my questions. Annoying questions which could make the atmosphere quite awkward but he needed to talk. Asking him to tell everything he has weighing on his heart was one of the solutions a lot of people use. Maybe it could work. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. "Drink to forget. It's a stupid idea, isn't it? The only thing you'll forget is probably to pay." I told him with an embarrassed smile on my face. "Plus, the hangover isn't the best thing to have. Trust me." I linked before he could say anything. "Do you wanna explain more how you're feelling right now?" I asked even if it was a rhetorical question.

Emrys felt so stupid, no one can understand how he felt. Even someone who lost his wife or her husband can't understand because Daisy wasn't only his wife, she was his soulmate. They had known each other since kindergarden and they fell in love when they were about five years old. Edward said he was sorry. Emrys used to heard that sentence, it seemed like everybody is sorry for what happened but he didn't care because it changed nothing to him. The man was curieus because he asked details to Emrys. He hesitated but after he said in his head : tomorrow I will remember anything so whatever. “she had a car accident two years ago.” he simply answered. He just answer the questions Edward ask and it's already a lot for him. Usually he would have say sothing. “I can't locking for someone else, I'm in love with her.” he said desperatly. He couldn't imagine be with someone else, even if it's been two years and he know she'll never come back. It's not like they divorced, sh'es dead, it's over. Emrys quite agree Edward, it wasn't a good idea to drink until he couldn't walk straight but it isn't the worst idea, it could have been worse ! “what else can I do ?” he asked, hoping for a good answer. The last question of Edward put a smile on Emrys' face but not a happy smile. “what do you think ? I'm not happy, she misses me.”

Still in love with her? After two years? I knew some of them after that question "After all this time?" would answer "Always" but I'd always thought that love disappeared at one point. Maybe their relation was different, maybe it all depended on each person. I couldn't tell. I nodded. I didn't know what to say. Sure, he could miss her, we must feel empty without someone we used to live with but it's time to turn the page on this sad chapter. What could he do? "Maybe you can try to write your thoughts down, or hang out, see your circle, meet new people or do some things you like to do." I ansewered. Anything to forget about her or at least, not to think about her that much. His next answer was quite predictable. I should have expected that but maybe he would have explained more, as if he was a member of the Dead Poets Society. "Do you have anyone you could talk to? People at work, your own family even if she could represent the world for you." I asked. A stupid question maybe, but sometimes our relatives can be a source of warmth like a distraction. I took my glass and kept drinking to spend time. I felt like it became a bit awkward and once in my life it's like I felt ill-at-ease. How can you cheer up a man as sad and torn as him? "Have you ever thought about suicide?" I asked while I was looking at him, a little bit worried.
